European ox-drifts PDF Print E-mail

Welcome to our Website!

For about 400 years (from the late Middle Ages to the early Modern Period) some 200.000 oxen were transferred from Hungary and Transylvania to the West. Half of them came to South Germany to feed the bourgeois of emergent towns. The tradition of this ancient trail of culture and trade nearly fell into oblivion.

In 2008 a transnational project was initiated to revive the culture of the ancient trail. Regional and transnational proects are being implemented by following the former route. The objectives of this are to foster cultural communication between European regions and to encourage tourism.

On this transnational site you will find information on the history of the ox drift as well as a chronicle of the most important activities round the ox trail. In a calender you will be informed about recent events. In addition, there are pictures and presentations for you to download. For further information see Links.
